Dutchman Tim Kliphuis breathes new life into existing styles with his high-energy brand of Classical, Gypsy Jazz, Celtic and World music. His improvised sound is totally new, yet steeped in tradition.
Classically trained and widely regarded as the inheritor of the Stephane Grappelli crown, Kliphuis first made his name playing with the fiery European gypsy guitarists but soon developed a more personal style taking him to classical, jazz and folk venues around the world.
Tim’s Trio’s electrifying performances have made them firm favourites on the festival scene. Highlights include the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, North Sea and Edinburgh Jazz Festivals, Richard Strauss Festival and Fiddles On Fire.
Tim’s eclectic tastes in music have led to collaborations with legends in other styles such as Frankie Gavin (Ireland), Richard Galliano (France) and the late Les Paul (USA), but he is still in touch with the traditional Sinti gypsy community through regular performances with The Rosenberg Trio, Fapy Lafertin and others.
As an educator, Kliphuis is the author of best-selling book ‘Stéphane Grappelli Gypsy Jazz Violin’, the much-praised ‘Hot Jazz Violin’ DVDs and Jazz Etude videos. His workshops have been featured at festivals, conservatoires and summer courses in the USA, Canada, UK, South Africa, Switzerland, Germany and Holland.
Tim ist he Improvisation teacher on the string faculties of Amsterdam, Tilburg and (from September 2017) The Hague conservatoires, as well as an Improvisation project leader in Rotterdam. He hosts an annual Gypsy Jazz violin camp back home in Holland every August.
